The next morning, outside the Tenth Street guard gate, Mark passed the tape off as though we were involved in some covert operation. “I’m sorry you didn’t get a chance to see it.”

“Seeing myself on film is like chewing on shoe leather, as Nana would say.”

“Well, you better get used to it, Mom.”

I called Shelby on my cell. “I’m down at the gate.”

“I’ll be right there,” she said.

“Here you go!” I turned my audition tape over to her and exhaled.

Despair was written all over her pretty face.

“You said eleven,” I said, guessing there was a problem.

She put her hand on my shoulder. “The courier came early. I’m sorry.”

I knew it was the van I had seen leaving.

“That is so sad!” she said, feeling my pain.

Until now I hadn’t realized how badly I wanted at least a shot at being a producer.

“Why give up so easy? Didn’t you say you believe in prayer?” Shelby asked.

“Yes, I believe in prayer.” As I said the words aloud to Shelby, I was convicted. Lately I hadn’t done much praying. I’d been stuck too far into the whine zone.

“Well then, pray.”

I prayed my little heart out.

A second later Shelby’s phone rang.

“That was Plum at the front desk. You won’t believe it! The courier called. He’s heading back because he forgot the directions to the casting company on my desk. That means I can get your tape in with the rest!”
